Hospital Stay Advice for Kids from Kids

Here’s a list of distractions and activities to do when you’re in the hospital:

  • Learn how to knit
  • Watch lots of TV
  • Read
  • Make your dad let you give him a manicure and pedicure (boy, will that put a smile on your face!). Give one to your brother, too. And to make it more fun, don’t let them have nail polish remover!
  • Ask your parents for money (they’ll feel bad for you and give it to you).
  • Ask the nurses for Koflex. It’s a colorful, flexible, slightly sticky, reusable cast-like material. It’s fun to play with and you can pretend you broke your arm.
  • If they let you, get window paint and decorate your windows.
  • Have friends visit.
  • If you’re a girl, ask your friends to bring makeup and ask the nurses if you can give them a makeover.
  • Try acupuncture. It doesn’t hurt. If you don’t like needles, try the kind where they put tiny metal things in your ear.
  • If you’re tired, go to sleep (you need lots of it).
  • Find a child-life specialist and go to the playroom a lot.
  • Make a list of what you like/dislike and put it on your door. Here is mine (feel free to borrow it for your own):
“Please remember that I am a 10- year old person, not just a patient. Knock on the door. Wait for me to say “come in”. Call my mom “Sally”. Introduce yourself. Say what you are here to do. Do not touch my belly. Do not stand in front of the TV. Thank you.”

And when it’s time to go home, make sure you have all your favorite snacks in stock. Here is a list of food to have at home for when you get out of the hospital:

  • Popsicles
  • White rice
  • Noodles
  • Fresh fruit
  • Japanese rice crackers
  • Sorbet
