Whitcomb Named 1st Medical Director of The National Pancreas Foundation

Boston, MA/Pittsburgh, PA – (April 22, 2010) – David C. Whitcomb. MD, PhD is the first Medical Director of The National Pancreas Foundation (NPF).

According to Joseph Titlebaum, NPF Board Chair, “The decision to create the role of Medical Director at the start of this year is in keeping with the current initiatives to grow the Foundation. We believe that with Dr. Whitcomb we are continuing to raise the profile of the NPF in the medical community and the general population, and in turn are able to make a positive impact to those whose lives are affected by diseases of the pancreas.”

As Medical Director for the national health foundation focused specifically on diseases of the pancreas, Dr. Whitcomb acts as the “voice” of the NPF and is the go-to resource for media, advocacy, the medical community and others for issues related to patient care.

In a statement released by Dr. Whitcomb, he said, “As a physician-scientist who has dedicated my professional career to providing revolutionary advances in the care of people with pancreatic diseases, it is my great honor to be named Medical Director of the National Pancreas Foundation.”  He added, “I am always pleased to provide advice and opinion to the leadership of the NPF, and to represent the NPF on issues that directly impact patient care.”

Dr. Whitcomb is the Giant Eagle Foundation Professor of Cancer Genetics and a tenured professor of medicine, cell biology and physiology, and human genetics at the University of Pittsburgh, School of Medicine. He is also chief of the division of gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition, as well as, Medical Director of the Comprehensive Pancreas Program, Liver-Pancreas Institute. Dr. Whitcomb is a long time board member of the NPF.

Founded in 1999, The National Pancreas Foundation is a non-profit organization whose mission is to support the research of diseases of the pancreas and to provide information and humanitarian services to those who are facing such illnesses.
