NPF Co-Founder Appointed to Gastrointestinal Scientific Steering Committee of National Cancer Institute
The National Pancreas Foundation is pleased to announce that starting July 1, 2010, Ms. Jane Holt, co-founder of the NPF will begin a three year term on the Gastrointestinal Scientific Steering Committee (GISC). She will serve as a Patient Advocate representative.
This committee is part of the approximately nine disease-specific steering committees formed in response to the recommendations of the National Cancer Advisory Board Clinical Trials Working Group report. The GISC is currently composed of the Steering Committee and seven specific disease-site task forces. Members of the GISC include all Cooperative Group gastrointestinal disease committee chairs, representatives from Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPOREs), Cancer Center and R01/P01 investigators along with community oncologists, biostatistician(s), patient advocates and NCI staff.
The mission of the GISC is to harmonize an efficient, cost-effective, science-driven, and transparent process that will identify and promote the “Best Science” in gastrointestinal cancer clinical research by addressing the design and prioritization of phase III trials in gastrointestinal cancer and large phase II studies.
In a statement from Ms. Holt, she said, “I am honored to have been selected to serve on this committee. I think it is extremely important that the voice of the patient is heard on committees such as this, and I look forward to this opportunity.”
We extend our congratulations to Jane and look forward to hearing from her on her work with this committee.

Congratulations Jane and I just read your story. I’m sure you will definitely represent the Chronic Pancreatitis Patients who suffer with excruciating pain and have to do so many things to keep that pain under control and go on with life so that kids and family members won’t be sad all the time. We don’t want our kids to miss their childhood or we want our kids to enjoy all the things just like other children at any age. To make it happen we have to accept and tolerate knowing there is no other way and enjoy the family.
Bravo! I’m so happy there will be someone who knows about the pain, who went through the pain is going to represent us.
