Peter A. Banks, MD honored at American Pancreatic Association’s Annual Meeting

On Thursday, November 4, 2010, longtime National Pancreas Foundation board member, Dr. Peter Banks was presented with the Vay Liang and Frisca Go Award for Lifetime Achievement.  In front of a capacity crowd of his peers and his family and friends, Dr. Banks was honored for his work in the field of pancreatology.

Dr. Banks attended Harvard College, graduated from Medical School at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons and then did his internship and medical residency at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston.  He joined the Harvard Medical School in 1967.  In 1973, he became the Director of Clinical Gastroenterology and Director for the Center of Pancreatic Disease at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.  He initiated the Academic Clinical Track Gastroenterology Fellowship Program and continues to direct the program.

Dr. Banks has received numerous awards including the Jerry S. Trier Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in 1999, the AGA Distinguished Educator Award in 2000 and the Outstanding Achievement in Clinical Gastroenterology Award from the APA in 2006.

Dr. Banks remains very active as a clinician, clinical investigator, teacher and mentor.  His contributions to the National Pancreas Foundation are invaluable.  He has been the voice of reason and of vision, and he has helped guide our Foundation through many years.  His accomplishments and achievements are enormous, and to those of us privileged enough to know Dr. Banks, we would count his friendship and his compassion as priceless.
