What inspired you to run for the NPF?
I’d never heard of pancreatitis until my husband, Dave, was struck down with acute pancreatitis in April 2017. Unfortunately, the attack occurred on day 4 of our holiday of a lifetime in New York, where we had taken our kids who were 9 and 12 for a holiday they would never forget. Dave was treated at NYU Langone and was hospitalised for 7 days, meaning that we had no choice but to return to the UK without him.
Back in the UK he had a further attack where I had to play paramedic and rush him to our nearest hospital because it was so touch and go whether an ambulance would get to us quickly enough. We were fortunate to have seen a consultant, who happened to be working that day, about what had occurred in NYC and therefore he was quickly receiving the best treatment possible as there was no delay in diagnosis.
We have doubt that the research and awareness raised by NPF played a significant role in Dave getting the best treatment possible, especially in the USA where he was a few hours from total organ failure. Therefore we are raising money by running the marathon (Dave) and 10k (Rach) to ensure that vital work continues.
